Cameron Grove Homeowners Association President Philippa Johnston shares the story of how her active-retired community stood up against an effort to change the zoning to permit the building of a "town center" type project along the 202 corridor. Mobilizing both directly to decision makers and elected officials, but also, engaging support horizontally across the county, they successfully stopped the one project, and then, realized that activists can never stop. Vigilance and continuous action is required. They invited candidates of all types to address them, for an hour, on a wide range of questions, in order to assess the real qualifications and intentions of each. Effective community-based action is essential to good civic decision-making. Cameron Grove provides an excellent example of the power of citizens to create change.
